PROPHECIES AGAINST PHARAOH
1 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the Word of the LORD came unto me, saying (This Chapter was written about two or three months before the fall of Jerusalem. It deals with the ruin of two mighty empires, Egypt and Assyria [the latter had fallen years before], and their banishment to Eternal Hell. The language is striking, and leaves nothing to the imagination),
2 Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom are you like in your greatness? (The question, “Whom are you like in your greatness?”, is speaking of Sardana-Palus, the last king of Assyria, who was conquered by Nebuchadnezzar. Possibly, Pharaoh looked up to this now dead despot; however, his end will be as Sardana-Palus’, defeated and lost!)
3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs. (The Prophet likens empires to great trees, and their kings to the highest branches. The Prophecy penetrates the world of the dead, and reveals the disembodied spirits of deceased kings as no longer royal personages, but members of the general multitude of the dead and the damned. Thus, this Chapter is one of the few which unveils the mysterious spirit world.)
4 The waters made him great, the deeps set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field. (“The waters,” “the deep,” and the “rivers” pictured the nations that contributed to the wealth of the empire; and “the trees of the fields” symbolized the subordinate kings. Such is portrayed to proclaim the splendor of the Assyrian kingdom, and how it was thought to be impossible to be brought to destruction.)
5 Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth. (The “exaltation” was enjoyed because of the supremacy of the Assyrian empire; however, this supremacy was gained by brute terror and force.)
6 All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations. (“And under his shadow dwelt all great nations,” imposes the fact that much of the riches and greatness of the Assyrian empire was derived from heavy taxation levied on those subjugated nations.)
7 Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters. (The Holy Spirit uses the word “greatness” in describing the Assyrian empire, but yet it was a “greatness” in the eyes of man, and not God.)
8 The cedars in the Garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the Garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. (“In the Garden of God,” represents the Sovereignty of the Lord over these nations, even though they did not know Him, nor even recognize Him, but were rather idol worshipers.)
9 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the Garden of God, envied him. (“Envied him,” not only pertains to Pharaoh, but also to the other nations of the world. Tragically, even Israel, the Northern Kingdom, which was supposed to be the People of God, and consequently looking to Jehovah, instead “envied him,” i.e., “Assyria.”)
10 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; Because you have lifted up yourself in height, and he has shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height (“Because you have lifted up yourself in height,” reveals the reason for the destruction of Assyria. It was great pride!);
11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness. (“The mighty one of the heathen” refers to Nebuchadnezzar, who would subjugate the mighty Assyrian empire, because the Lord deemed it necessary.)
12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the Earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him. (The idea of the Holy Spirit is to impress upon Pharaoh the cause of the destruction upon the proud empire of the Assyrians, and that the Egyptians were facing the same ruin, because they were traveling in the same wicked direction.)
13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches (the idea of this Verse is that once this tree stood tall and proud, but now it is no more, and the vultures and jackals hover and creep over the carcass of the dead, decaying trunk):
14 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the Earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them who go down to the Pit. (The phraseology in this Verse suggests that hell [or Sheol] is situated in the center of the Earth. In that “Pit,” the greatest monarchs rank with the disembodied spirits of the generality of men. The mightiest and the greatest are “in the midst of the children of men, with them who go down to the Pit.” What a warning to the whole of humanity! But, it is largely ignored!)
15 Thus sa ys the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him. (“In the day when he went down to the grave,” does not refer to the burying of a body in a grave, as the word is commonly used, but rather refers to “Sheol.” This is the place of departed spirits who are in Hell, and who have full consciousness. Jesus said so [Lk. 16:19-31].)
16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to Hell with them who descend into the Pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all who drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the Earth. (“When I cast him down to Hell with them who descend into the Pit,” pertains to the Lord casting the last king of the Assyrian empire, Sardana-Palus, down into Sheol, i.e., Hell. The phrase, “Shall be comforted in the nether parts of the Earth,” refers to the mighty empire and nations, already fallen and in Hell. They are “comforted” with the thought that yet another kingdom mightier than they has fallen as they fell.)
17 They also went down into Hell with him unto them who be slain with the sword; and they who were his arm, who dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen. (Sadly and regrettably, almost all of mankind has died eternally lost, which means they went to Hell. Jesus said so [Mat. 7:13-15].)
18 To whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shall you be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the Earth: you shall lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them who be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, says the Lord GOD. (The question, “To whom are you...?” is repeated as it was given in Verse 2. The answer here is that Pharaoh was only comparable to ordinary monarchs, and that his death would be without honor. And so it fell out, for he was strangled. CHAPTER 32 (587 B.C.) A LAMENTATION OVER PHARAOH
1 And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, in the first day of the month, that the Word of the LORD came unto me, saying (this Prophecy was uttered over a year after the destruction of Jerusalem),
2 Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, You are like a young lion of the nations, and you are as a whale in the seas: and you came forth with your rivers, and troubled the waters with your feet, and fouled their rivers. THE SWORD OF BABYLON WILL FALL ON EGYPT; JUDGMENT
3 Thus says the Lord GOD; I will therefore spread out My Net over you with a company of many people; and they shall bring you up in My Net. (It is an apt illustration, “My Net,” signifying the Babylonians appointed by the Lord to take Egypt down, which they did.)
4 Then will I leave you upon the land, I will cast you forth upon the open field, and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon you, and I will fill the beasts of the whole Earth with you.
5 And I will lay your flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with your height. (As Pharaoh surveyed his troops and, no doubt, admired their supposed power, he little realized that their destiny had already been decided, and that those of which he thought so highly would soon be rotting corpses.)
6 I will also water with your blood the land wherein you swim, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of you. (The Nile Valley is formed by the Eastern and Western Mountains. As the waters were turned into blood in the days of Moses, so the land would be drenched with blood in the days of Nebuchadnezzar.)
7 And when I shall put you out, I will cover the heaven, and make the Stars thereof dark; I will cover the Sun with a cloud, and the Moon shall not give her light. (This Verse leads back to the plague of darkness that gripped Egypt during the time of Moses [Ex. 10:21]. Then it was literal; now it is poetical, and intending the overthrow of the imperial and executive governments. As such, their light would go out and they would be no more.)
8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you, and set darkness upon your land, says the Lord GOD. (This Verse, although obscure and little thought of [as its surrounding Passages], has to do greatly with the rise and fall of nations. The degree of their Judgment has to do with the Light once given, and rejected.)
9 I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries which you have not known. (The idea is: concerning the “vexing of hearts,” if Egypt could not stand against the mighty Babylonians, where did that leave smaller and weaker nations?)
10 Yes, I will make many people amazed at you, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for you, when I shall brandish My Sword before them; and they shall tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of your fall. (The idea of this Verse proclaims the helplessness of those who have boasted of their invincibility, hence, “tremble at every moment.” Men can easily boast of their power, but when God begins to make His Power felt, the mighty efforts of even the strongest men quickly are shown to be insignificant.)
11 For thus says the Lord GOD; The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. (Very plainly, the Prophet proclaims the coming destruction of Egypt by the Babylonians, and even several years before it actually happened, but with no favorable response from Pharaoh. Pharaoh did not believe Jehovah, so why should he believe His Prophet?)
12 By the swords of the mighty will I cause your multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed. (The phrase, “And they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt,” refers to Egypt’s pride, which was boasting itself through Pharaoh-Hophra; however, this “pomp” would be destroyed, as he was strangled to death by his own men.)
13 I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters; neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more, nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them. (“The foot of man,” pertained to individuals who peddled an apparatus designed to lift water from the Nile in order to irrigate the land. The invasion by Nebuchadnezzar would cause the cattle to be killed or taken as a war prize, with all irrigation stopped, which means the crops would be nonexistent that year.)
14 Then will I make their waters deep, and cause their rivers to run like oil, says the Lord GOD.
15 When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate, and the country shall be destitute of that whereof it was full, when I shall smite all them who dwell therein, then shall they know that I Am the LORD. (The idea is: the heathen did not believe the Prophecies, the Prophets, or Jehovah Who sent them; however, their unbelief would have no effect whatsoever on the carrying out of these Prophecies. They would know that Jehovah was “Lord. They would know that Jehovah was “Lord GOD,” in contrast to their gods, which had no power against the Most High.)
16 This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her: the daughters of the nations shall lament her: they shall lament for her, even for Egypt, and for all her multitude, says the Lord GOD. (In the minds of these heathen, the contest was always between gods. Therefore, before the fact, the idea of Jehovah, Who had already suffered defeat by the Babylonians [at least in their thinking], being stronger than their gods was laughable. And then, when the destruction came, their “lamentation” was great, not only for the destruction of Egypt, but for the testing of her gods by Jehovah, which put them in jeopardy, as well!)
EGYPT WILL JOIN OTHER NATIONS IN HELL
17 It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth day of the month, that the Word of the LORD came unto me, saying (these Passages are some of the few which permit a momentary glance into the dreadful mystery of the spirit world),
18 Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the Earth, with them who go down into the Pit. (The phrases, “Nether parts of the Earth” and “The Pit,” refer to “Hell.” This, as stated, is in the center of the Earth. The loss of their nation was dreadful to say the least, but the loss of their souls even worse! Hence, the Holy Spirit records this fact.)
19 Whom do you pass in beauty? go down, and be you laid with the uncircumcised. (The word, “uncircumcised,” occurs some ten times in this Prophecy. It expresses non-relationship to God and corresponds to the modern word “unconverted.”)
20 They shall fall in the midst of them who are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes. (The phrase, “Slain by the sword,” is repeated twelve times in this Prophecy. It signifies Divine Judgment.)
21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of Hell with them who help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword. (The “strong” refers to the other Pharaohs and other mighty kings, such as the Assyrians, who had already gone to Hell and would “speak to him,” i.e., Pharaoh. That which they will speak will not be words of encouragement, respect, or appreciation, but instead words of scorn.)
22 Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword (the word, “graves,” at least in this instance, refers to the tomb or sepulcher, the place of the body, not the place of the soul. It merely means that they died, with the next Verses telling the eternal abode of their souls and spirits):
23 Whose graves are set in the sides of the Pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living. (The idea is: the mightiest of the mighty on Earth, when in Hell, will have no more sway or influence than the lowliest of the low.)
24 There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the Earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them who go down to the Pit. (The phrase, “Their shame,” refers to the fact that on Earth they were robed with honor, while in Sheol, they are “clothed with shame.”)
25 They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them who go down to the Pit: he is put in the midst of them who be slain. (The pronoun “they” refers to Assyria and Elam. The pronoun “her” refers to Egypt; the pronoun “him” refers to Pharaoh.)
26 There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living. (The pronoun “him” refers once again to Pharaoh. He is in the midst of these other fallen and slain: “Meshech, Tubal,” and the others mentioned.)
27 And they shall not lie with the mighty who are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to Hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living. (The idea of the Verse is that “Meshech” and “Tubal” have a lower place in Hell, if such is possible. “Which are gone down to Hell with their weapons of war,” does not mean that such items are taken down to Hell with the lost soul, but that there was no honor at all in their death, and they were buried without the honor of war. In other words, their swords were not placed beneath their heads at the burial.)
28 Yes, you shall be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shall lie with them who are slain with the sword.
29 There is Edom, her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by them who were slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them who go down to the Pit. (“There is Edom,” is used by the Holy Spirit as an exclamation! It is said in this manner because the exultation which the Edomites had shown over the fall of Jerusalem [Ps. 137:7] had exacerbated their already perilous spiritual condition. As such, this would guarantee their destruction.)
30 There be the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with them who be slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them who go down to the Pit. (Inasmuch as the Holy Spirit through the Prophet names the “Zidonians” and the “princes of the north,” it suggests the direction of Northern Syria, including cities like Damascus, Hamath, Arpad, and others. These too went to Hell!)
31 Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, says the Lord GOD. (As other nations were glad that Pharaoh would join them in Hell and likewise share their misery, now Pharaoh is glad to see others come to share his misery. All are sharers alike in the fiend-like temper which exults in the miseries of others.)
32 For I have caused my terror in the land of the living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with them who are slain with the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude, says the Lord GOD. (The election of Nebuchadnezzar as God’s “sword” and “terror” is one of the great facts of Scripture. The sword humbled Egypt, in whom Israel trusted. It also humbled all the neighboring nations and, thus, destroyed many snares which entrapped the sons of Israel. All these Judgments reached forward to a future day, and will be followed by the establishment in Grace of the redeemed nations in union with the New Israel [Isa., Chpt. 19], so forming the one flock of Jn. 10:16 in the Shepherd-care of the Messiah.)
